The Rensselaer County wreck happened on I-90, near exit 9 in East Greenbush, shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28.
A Pleasant Valley man, 49, was driving eastbound when the vehicle veered off the right shoulder, struck a tree, and overturned before coming to rest in a wooded area, New York State Police said.
A passenger in the vehicle, Irene Pearl, 72, of Pleasant Valley, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. An 8-week-old puppy was also found in the car and was taken to East Greenbush Animal Hospital, where it died.
No other vehicles were involved. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
